You Need To File If
  • You register a highway motor vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 lbs or more.
  • You put a new taxable vehicle on the road mid-year (a first-used-month filing).
  • Your vehicle's weight category changed and more tax is now owed (an amendment).
You May Not Need To
  • Your vehicle's taxable gross weight is under 55,000 lbs.
  • You expect the vehicle to travel 5,000 miles or less this tax period (7,500 for agricultural vehicles) — you still file, as a suspended vehicle, but owe no tax.

Not sure which applies to you? Ask us before you file — there's no charge for the question.

Questions

Form 2290 FAQ

Anyone who registers a highway motor vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 lbs or more must file Form 2290 for the tax period, and pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) unless the vehicle qualifies as suspended.

Vehicles under 55,000 lbs taxable gross weight generally do not need to file. A vehicle expected to travel 5,000 miles or less in the tax period (7,500 for agricultural vehicles) is a suspended vehicle — a return is still filed to report the suspension, but no tax is due.

Most returns are reviewed, e-filed, and accepted by the IRS within minutes during business hours, and the stamped Schedule 1 is emailed the same day. If we find an issue first, we contact you to fix it before filing rather than after.

We review every return before it's transmitted specifically to prevent this. If the IRS does reject a return, we correct the issue and refile it at no additional charge.

Yes, if we filed the original return. We correct and refile it at no charge.
